Pak Suzuki sells three versions: the Alto VXR at Rs 2,994,861, the Alto VXR-AGS at Rs 3,166,480 and the Alto VXL-AGS at Rs 3,326,446, all ex-factory. Every version gets dual front airbags, ABS and hill hold control as standard, which is unusual at this price.

Engine and gearbox

All three use the 658cc R06A three-cylinder petrol engine with 39 hp at 6,500 rpm and 56 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. The VXR has a 5-speed manual gearbox; the two AGS versions use Suzuki’s automated manual (AGS), which drives like an automatic in traffic.

Space and running costs

The Alto is 3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide and 1,490 mm tall, with a 2,460 mm wheelbase, 170 mm of ground clearance and a small 27-litre fuel tank. It seats four. Pak Suzuki does not publish a boot-space figure for the Alto on its official specification sheet. The 170 mm ground clearance suits broken city roads.

Safety and equipment

Standard equipment across the range includes dual front airbags, ABS, seat belt pretensioners with force limiters, ISOFIX child seat anchors, childproof rear door locks, hill hold control, keyless entry, a security system, central door locks, air conditioning, power windows (front and rear) and power steering. For Pakistan’s cheapest new car, that safety kit punches above its price.

Which Alto should you buy?

The VXR is the cheapest way into a brand-new car in Pakistan. The AGS versions are easy to drive in traffic and worth the premium if you drive in the city daily — the VXL-AGS adds the most equipment of the three. Note that the 658cc engine feels modest on motorways, and there is no factory touchscreen infotainment.
